OpenApoc is planned as an open source remake of the original XCOM: Apocalypse game.

Further down the line, it will hopefully get additional changes such as higher resolution and mod support.

At this early juncture, there's nothing for players to use, but if you want to get involed, there's plans for language packs, and when somethng gets released, it'll need testing.

Hopefully you stay around for the ride, and we can do for Apoc what OpenXCOM did for UFO: Enemy Unknown

It's very exciting to watch this project happen.

While I'm not a coder, I would certainly participate somehow, as you described.

    So let's roll!

I know this is a fan work, and that it hasn't really started yet, but would it be possible to outline a very general development plan? I mean something like a list of milestones with estimated time-frames.

And a minor thing, can we please get an icon for this forum to appear in tabs and such? The one at ufopaedia.org seems fine for now: [IMG]

I think that needs to be done in a forum theme. I've not really looked yet, but if you come across one we could use, let me know

ok i am here to offer my support, Go! PMPROG Go! :p

So should we be trying to drum up some community support? Are you looking for other coders yet or did you want to define your systems and goals first? I am happy to start sharing this project around other Opensource sites in the hope for some helpers for you.

    Thanks, and welcome OpenApoc :)

Feel free to share it anywhere you want, and to encourage people to join the boards. There's not much people can help with at the minute, but there will be in time.

If you want, I can volunteer this forum's moderator. I've done this before.

(But I know nothing of related technical issues.)

Kind of. Not much activity, but then, I suppose there's not much to shout about yet :)

I like some aspecs of my new theme, but really dislike others. Would be nice if somebody could come up with a decent looking theme. Orange and black/dark grey sort of theme

I believe you can get add-ons for the forum to do that. I've not tried any yet though. You should be able to copy/paste links to threads in the mean time.

I've not really admin'd forum software for a while, so still just fiddling around. I think I've found a better theme, which I'll put on later.

I could really do with a nice logo too. I've managed to find a font that's almost identical to that used in the "Apocalypse" wording on the european cover (it's in my OpenApoc git repo in the /data folder, in case anyone is interested). I have a couple of other ideas, and might try and flesh that out later.

Also, I've updated the Milestones post, to reflect the current progress.

Hey thanks for jumping up and taking on the buggiest xcom ever, this will be a project for the ages!

You may or may not remember me from the OXC forums but I never got into coding OXC. I intend to get involved here though.

I'm not a very experienced programmer and I'm pretty new to C++ but I think it will be great experience for me, and I think I can help. For the moment I'm re-installing VS2008 so I can start be building the source and familiarizing myself with the code.

I'm also new to versioning systems like git, so I guess we'll just have to see how much help I actually prove to be.

Welcome. I've started designing the game around translatable text, so if you could help with the spanish translation later, that would be great. Thanks

Welcome. The code should be pretty cleanly split:
    • Framework - This contains stuff that initialises Allegro, and process the game loop
    • Game - Anything specific to OpenApoc is here
    • Library - A bunch of tools and functions I've written over to speed up development
    • Shaders - Software shaders, probably can be deleted, but leave them there for now
    • Transitions - Transitional effects between stages (game states), such as fading in/out

You have to start somewhere :)

    This looks fun :D

I might be able to help with any Linux or Graphics work as well, if I get the time (and you're willing to take my help)

My greatest strength would probably be concept/balance (much tougher than people think :p ), but I can make some sprites...

Just drop by to say thanks for trying to bring the old glory of apocalypse to the surface! When talking about XCOM, most people would just think of UFODefense or TFTD, i'm so sad :(
