    Hello, everyone!

Waiting for a new version of the FMP modpack I've started a project of the Russian translation of OpenApoc. At first I wanted to use an old Fargus translation or a newer Zone of Games translation, but after I had taken a look at them (especially their technical format) I decided to re-translate a game from scratch. I'm not registered at Github and would be very pleased if someone uploads my translation to the repository as soon as I would have finished the work. A sample of my translation is attached to the post.

    Looks good!

Are you willing to create a Github account? It makes it quite a lot easier to merge in, and track attribution (We don't want your hard work not being appreciated properly!). If not, that's OK, I can push it myself, but if you can give me a name and email to fill the check-in details with.

One possible issue - the apoc fonts don't seem to have the cyrillic alphabet! (data/LANGUAGE/SMALSET.XML has all the characters it supports).

I'm not sure what we can do about this, maybe we'll have to draw the letters ourselves in the same font 'style'? Or import a similar-looking font and accept it might look at bit weird interspersed (Or we only use the apoc fonts for languages that the apoc fonts have all the characters for, and always use the 'fallback' font for languages that are missing characters).

OK, thanks! I'll think about the possibilities, but I'm not a programmer and not sure if I can afford the GitHub.

I knew that was a problem of the original Apocalypse and wasn't sure if this problem persisted at the remake. So, I think the best decision is to create a new font with the cyrillic symbols and maybe other missing alphabets. I hope Skin36 will manage to draw a new font. If not I think we can use a solution chosen by Russian pirates and fans of the game. The existing translations are attached to this post so you can take a look at them. I don't like this alternative too much but it's much better than nothing.

GitHub is free. It's only paid if you want a private repo :)

I know it :). My mis-use of word, sorry: I wanted to say that GitHub was not so easy to use for a nonspecialist in programming (at least it's my impression of it :)).

    Ah, sorry, I misunderstood.

It is actually quite straightforward, and for the purposes of translating you could follow these steps:

    1. Create an account
    2. Go to https://github.com/pmprog/OpenApoc and click the Fork button in the top right corner
    3. Click the "data", then "LANGUAGES" folder links

There's two files you'll need to modify - LANGUAGES.XML and STRINGS.XML - it's the same process to edit both
    1. Click the file you wish to edit
    2. On the right hand side above the text, there's some icons. One is a pen which says "Edit this file" if you hover over it. Click that
    3. Make your changes
    4. Click the "Commit Changes" green button at the bottom once you're done

    After you've done both files
    1. Go back to your project url, and click Pull Requests (icon on the right hand side, 3rd down)
    2. Click "New Pull Request"
    3. Enter some details
    4. Click "Create Pull Request"

That's it... wait for one of us to merge it into the master :)

    Hello, everyone!

I have some good news. I finished the work on the Russian translation of Strings.XML file. It will definetely need some editing though I have already read the translation one time. But I hope it's not a big problem.

And now I have some questions. First of all, as far as I can see currently the text is not completely exported to the text files. As far as I understand there's no file that could allow to translate the text contained in the TACP.EXE and UFO2P.EXE files. I can make a separate file, retrieve the text using a hex editor and translate those strings (i. e. the messages appearing in the data line) but first I decided to specify what pmprog and JonnyH wanted to do with these files. Maybe I'm in hurry and the parsing of these files is in the future plans.

Secondly I need to know what we will do with the names of the operatives. Until now in any disputable issue I used the OXC solution. In OXC all the names are written in English, regardless the nationality of the operatives. I don't like that too much but I can easily understand the logic of the OXC translators in that particular case.

Also I completely forgot but Russian pirates made a voice translation of the videos in the game. I wonder if we are allowed to use them in any form.

Besides that I have some problems with the translation of the names of alien races, and more precisely, "overspawn", "megaspawn" and "queenspawn". I don't like the usual transcription of the words because here the root "spawn" indicates that these races have close interconnections. That's why I created my own version - "сверхплод", "мегаплод" и "королева" but I don't like the result too much. Anyway, I think the Fargus version - "оверспон", "мегатрон" и "королева" - is even worse. I ask everyone who can speak Russian to engage in the discussion on that matter.

And the last but not least. I started the work on the creation of the cyrillic font for OpenApoc with a lot of help of Skin36 and he advised me to ask about the character set that would be used in the game - Windows-1251 or UTF-8. Since I'm absolutely not a specialist in that domain I can't choose myself or even recommend either option and will wait for the opinions of more experienced project participants.

    Hello, everyone!

We have some good news about the work on the translation. First of all, as Skin36 already told in another thread, he managed to extract all of the text strings that contained in the exe files. These strings were uploaded to Transifex and our little team (Skin36, insolor and I) translated the whole game into Russian. The translation is now 100 % complete and can be found here: https://www.transifex.com/x-com-apocalypse/apocalypse/translate/#ru_RU I don't think it's perfect because a lot of strings need some context to be really sure about their meaning but it's the best we could do.

Another good news is that we managed to create a cyrillic part of all of three fonts and integrate our translation to the game. I must thank JonnyH for making a technical build available for download. It's very cool that we now have a possibility to see what is already done. I'm really impressed by the work done during this year. Hope you guys will continue the work on the project. And below I'm giving some links to screenshots to show how the translation is working in the current state of game. I hope you'll like the results.
