I thought about the Fallout, recently, that there is also an isometry and that it exists in the post-apocalyptic world and that something can be used from the Fallout in Xcom
(just want to write this idea here despite the hard work associated with the implementation of this idea)

here some quotes from X-Com timeline that nothing else then description of apocalypse )
so 2084 (time of X-Com Apocalypse) is post apoc times

and here some isometric and style compare so some of elements can be used from Fall like:
barrels, tire covers, trees, bushes, grass, some land textures, garbage, stones, etc.
mainly for different places outside of city
    despite diff isometric angles

Using sprites and objects from Fallout may not be too wise. Although i love the idea :)

The biggest issue would be Copyright, to use those elements in an OpenSource game you would require each user to legally own a copy of both Apocalypse and Fallout and have the software use those resources on a per-user basis.

The only way round this would be to take those sprites and modify them by 30% of all pixels per sprite (The US and UK legal minimum "difference") and have them clearly credited as a "derivative" work. That way you could avoid being sued by the copyright owner. I've known a couple of projects take this root, but you have to be able to prove, if asked, that 30% or more of the original sprite has been redrawn (not simply recoloured).

I know on the front of all your objections =) but still i wanted write about it)

Why we would require each user to legally own copy of games?
its each user responsibility. we only need strongly notice that for all who use openapoc
need to have legally own game copy

also we can say that openapoc only mode for games)

That's what i mean, for a user to play OpenApoc they would have to own both Fallout and Apocalypse vanilla with the OpenApoc program looking for the appropriate resources when it was run.

The only way to avoid that would be to modify the fallout sprites by >30%, credit them as derivative, and distribute them with OpenApoc.

Not every person who wants to play OpenApoc would want those sprites however so implementation would require it to be an "optional" feature.

Going the 30% route would make more sense, as sprites can then be redrawn to better match the apocalypse style and colour pallet and for that reason i think using the Fallout resources could be a great idea, though a lot of work as you have pointed out

I believe nobody gives a damn about copyright crap if you use this art in a free mod.
There is also Crusader no Remorse/no Regret series [IMG]
I have converted some of it's props and characters to fallout and fallout tactics in a distant past)
    Also Gender Wars [IMG]
Looks yummy, but i have no idea how to extract stuff from it...
